Auditions

Oasis has had good luck in attracting new talent so far this year, but would still be interested in singers in each of the following categories:

  • Alto
  • Tenor
  • Bass (a Basso Profundo preferred)

If you're interested in singing with Oasis, please see the info at the bottom of this page

The Audition Process

Here's what to expect at an Oasis audition....

  • Please prepare TWO (2) solo pieces suited to your vocal range, and with which you are comfortable. At least one of the solo pieces must be accompanied by piano or another live instrument. Unless you are bringing your own accompanist, please bring sheet music so that our own pianist can accompany you. Your other solo piece may be accompanied by a live instrument, accompanied by a pre-recorded instrumental track (please bring your own player), or a cappella.
  • We will also test your ability to read music (or at least pick up cues quickly) by having you sing a simple jazz arrangement with representatives from each vocal part. After a couple of run-throughs, you will be asked to carry your own part. You don't have to sight-read perfectly, as long as you can learn easily.

The audition process is straight-forward and relaxed - we're a pretty easy-going bunch! If you have the right voice and the Oasis spirit, WE WANT YOU! And we want to make it as easy for you as possible!

If we should not accept you, however, please don't take it to heart - we've regretfully had to turn down some terrific singers simply because their vocal characteristics, while awesome in their own right, didn't fit in seamlessly to our overall blend. It's not a reflection of our opinions of your vocal prowess!

Conditions and Expectations

  • Oasis rehearses one night a week (Wednesdays for the 2000-2001 season) from September to June, from 7:45-9:45. While we can make allowances on an occasional basis (after all, several of our members have young children), we expect a commitment to attend most rehearsals, since the blend of all voices is our strength!
  • Our repertoire is predominantly non-religious, and we currently encompass Protestantism, Catholicism, Judaism, and Agnosticism in our membership; however, on occasion we do sing at events of a religious nature (mostly memorial or ceremonial). If you are uncomfortable singing music of other religions, or music with religious references, however infrequently, please do not audition.
  • Similarly, while our current membership encompasses the full spectrum of gender-orientation, Oasis had its genesis in the lesbian and gay community, and often seeks to perform in that environment. If you are not tolerant of such diversity, then Oasis is not the group for you.
  • While we love to provide ample opportunities for solo and smaller group numbers during our concerts, Oasis is mainly about and for ALL of its members. If you're a soloist looking for a back-up group, you're better off looking elsewhere.
  • Getting the best sound possible is important to us. Our Musical Director's position is a paid position. The members of Oasis contribute a monthly fee to cover the cost. From time to time, Oasis will bring in an artistic coach to help us with staging and visual presentation. The members of Oasis contribute a small fee for this service as well.

If your audition is successful and you agree to sing with Oasis based on the preceding conditions, we'll make sure you get sheet music as quickly as possible, since you'll probably want time to rehearse the current repertoire on your own before the start of the new season.
